Program Description:

Never in recent history has the need for outstanding government leaders been more acute than it is today. In the midst of global political uncertainty and threats to national security, the US government urgently needs leaders who think creatively, strategize effectively and respond with speed and competence to high-pressure situations. But if its current strategic talent management practices do not change quickly, the government will soon boast few such leaders. By some estimates, up to 70 percent of the Senior Executive Service is currently eligible to retire. While a number of agencies have taken action to upgrade their succession planning practices, considerable work remains to be done in implementing programs that will provide the agencies with the depth of leadership talent they need to meet the rapidly evolving demands for innovation in the 21st century. In addition, agencies must put processes in place to identify, capture, retain and transfer knowledge with multiple generations in the workforce.
