Topic: An Introduction to Dee Hock's Chaordic Theory

Facilitator: Robin Cook

Robin Cook is a thought leader in organizational development/culture change/organizational innovation.  He earned an M.A. in Human Relations at the University of Oklahoma.

Robin began his career with the Chicago Department of Human Services and later established a solo consulting practice working in the areas of organizational development and training.

In 1992, he joined the Planning Department of the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago (34 YMCAs in the Chicago area), where he led a massive set of turnaround/culture change initiatives that took the organization from 20 years in the red to 5 in the black and from a legacy organization to receiving the George Land World Class Innovator Award.  As a result, Robin received a full scholarship to the Innovation University Fellowship Program.  This extraordinary learning opportunity led to his development of the Organizational "Molecular" Model diagnostic tool and his identification of 9 cultural characteristics shared by some of the most innovative organizations in the world.

In 2000, Robin was brought on board by an early stage dot-com startup, charged with creating the internal culture for the organization.

In early 2008, Robin Joined Angarai International as the Organizational Development SME on the restructuring of a Pentagon technology agency.  Unfortunately, 8 months later that contract was not renewed.  He has been unemployed since.

Robin has had papers accepted by the First International Conference on Human Resources Development in Asia and the Association of Management/International Association of Management and the Organizational Development Network.

Program:
Dee Hock is the Chairman Emeritus of Visa.  He nearly single-handedly turned BankAmericard into Visa.  His experiences during those years led him to several years of study of Chaos and Complexity theories.  As a result, he has developed a very visionary organizational theory:  Chaordic Theory (from chaos and order).  A Chaordic organization is organic, dynamic, self regulating, constantly evolving, and demonstrates the capacity to effectively process and address today's massive information overload.

Robin Cook is one of the few people who have been formally trained in Dee's theory and process, having attended the first workshop Dee and the Chaordic Alliance ran in December of 2000.  Dee and his people have given Robin permission to use Dee's own slide deck (along with a few additions of his own) to present an introduction to Chaordic Theory.
