Session"Diversity Happens. DEI is Dead. What’s Next?"

In today’s polarized climate, DEI has become a “bad word” in many spaces—especially in politically charged environments like DC and across purple states like Virginia. Yet diversity is inevitable wherever people come together, and research consistently shows that diverse organizations perform better—both socially and financially.

So, how do we continue this work in a time when the language and structures of DEI are under pressure? Drawing on over 30 years in this field—long before “DEI” had a name—this session offers a candid exploration of how to navigate this moment with respect, adaptability, and purpose. We’ll reflect on past cycles of backlash, unpack what’s shifting now, and explore practical ways to foster equity and belonging through realigned tools for communication, leadership, and collaboration.

Let’s rethink what’s possible—and chart a sustainable path forward.

Presenter: Leah Kyaio

Leah is a natural communicator and coach who loves to learn, teach, and grow. Her guiding value is respect, grounded in her Native heritage and worldview. She has over 30 years of professional experience as the Respectful Relationship Renovator. Whether it’s women looking to recreate their relationships or providing executives with what they need to overcoming relationship issues with colleagues, bosses, or content, Leah asks the right questions, provides the best tools, and works alongside her clients to support the creation of respectful relationships that work for everyone. All along the way, she’ll tell you, it was a learning experience, perhaps even a social experiment. Most importantly, she will share the joy she found every step of the way. Her perspective and way of being can only be described as different. It is her authentic stories and ways of expressing herself that cause her audiences to say things like, "I never thought of it that way," “That’s something I will never forget,” and "I'm so touched and inspired." There's nothing you can ask that she won't answer, including telling you she doesn't know the answer but is happy to pontificate with you.

In a nutshell, Leah is like nothing you have experienced before, and she will leave you wanting more.
