Topic: Managing the Resistance in the System

    Facilitator: Harrison Snow

    Program:

On Friday, May 31, 2013 we will use an innovative process for understanding the resistance to change in an organization. The change process is seldom easy. Even if people want change there is the belief that, “No matter what anyone does things will never change.”  Naturally, many people expect others need to change but not themselves. To understand the dynamics of change we will map the key experiences, beliefs and/or concepts that are impacting how we and others show up and interact. Being an agent of change demands a profound “use of self” based on self-knowledge. The more aware we are of our own inner dynamics the more effective we can be in harmonizing those dynamics in an organization to produce a good outcome.

Topic: The Performance Manager: Hidden keys to employee performance

    Facilitator:  Steve Calandro

A successful senior human capital professional, Steve Calandro has over 20 years experience in performance management, organizational transformation, and organizational, team and individual assessment. A Brooklyn native, Steve has spent his entire career looking for the most effective ways to improve performance at work while eliminating unproductive conflict and other barriers. His company, Absolutely Accountable, delivers those findings in the form of advanced, results-driven performance consulting, leadership development, training, facilitation, and coaching. Steve is a graduate of New York University's Stern School of Business, holds a master’s degree in Applied I/O Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, and is a Certified NLP Practitioner.

Program Description:  The Performance Manager: Hidden keys to employee performance

Why do organizations ignore decades of rich, well established performance research? The fields of adult learning, human performance technology, motivation, linguistics, and even physics, have proven what people need at work to be both productive and engaged, most of it easily applied and highly effective. Yet virtually none of it is taught in traditional leadership development programs, management training, or even in Ivy League undergraduate business or MBA programs. Effective management skills stay in the journals while managers spend years searching for clues, wasting time and precious resources, and risking hard to replace talent. It’s not rocket science, it’s human science. In this session Steve Calandro outlines just a few of the powerful ways to break down performance barriers, reduce conflict, and increase engagement NOW, including:

    • The organization structure guaranteed to prevent high performance and what to do about it
    • High performance workforce assumptions
    • The 10 minute “Performance Feedback Workshop”
    • And more.

Interactive, eye-opening, and fun, attendees will walk out with practical new skills they can use at work the next day and effective consulting tools to benefit their own clients.

The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything by Dr. Ken Robinson

The element is the point at which natural talent meets personal passion. When people arrive at the element, they feel most themselves and most inspired and achieve at their highest levels. The Element draws on the stories of a wide range of people, from ex-Beatle Paul McCartney to Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons; from Meg Ryan to Gillian Lynne, who choreographed the Broadway productions of Cats and The Phantom of the Opera; and from writer Arianna Huffington to renowned physicist Richard Feynman and others, including business leaders and athletes. It explores the components of this new paradigm: The diversity of intelligence, the power of imagination and creativity, and the importance of commitment to our own capabilities.

With a wry sense of humor, Ken Robinson looks at the conditions that enable us to find ourselves in the element and those that stifle that possibility. He shows that age and occupation are no barrier, and that once we have found our path we can help others to do so as well. The Element shows the vital need to enhance creativity and innovation by thinking differently about human resources and imagination. It is also an essential strategy for transforming education, business, and communities to meet the challenges of living and succeeding in the twenty-first century.

    Facilitators:
Isabel Einzig-Wein, Leadership and Life Coach
    Unique Pathways

As a former elementary school educator, Isabel realized the advantage of being present to her students. She utilized her abilities of being available as a good listener, flexible in decision making, compassionate to her students’ needs, authentic in allowing them to know her vulnerabilities as a human being, trustworthy and prepared for the unexpected. As a colleague Isabel also knew that these attributes of presence were necessary to fostering relationships and negotiating in tough organizational situations.

As a business owner of a technology company, she became present to the needs of her employees who brought with them their own sense of culture due their backgrounds in private and organizational life. We have all been conditioned by our family, work life and environment. Isabel set out to have the diverse understandings become an opportunity rather than a deficit in forming the positive work environment that we have and continue to appreciate each day.
She works in the capacity of a Leadership Coach, a Life Coach, a Transition Coach, a Mentor Coach, and a Speaker. Isabel looks forward to the opportunity, in a coaching relationship, to provide guidance through powerful questions that clients will be able to answer and have “aha” moments that will show them the possibilities that lie ahead.

Denise and Patrizia focus on helping Government clients addressing the complex human capital issues. Jolie Nguyen has 7 years of experience in human capital services, knowledge management, communications and change management. She is currently providing knowledge management services to her clients in the areas of web portal design, communications and outreach, knowledge sharing, and collaboration.

    Program Description:
Never in recent history has the need for outstanding government leaders been more acute than it is today. In the midst of global political uncertainty and threats to national security, the US government urgently needs leaders who think creatively, strategize effectively and respond with speed and competence to high-pressure situations. But if its current strategic talent management practices do not change quickly, the government will soon boast few such leaders. By some estimates, up to 70 percent of the Senior Executive Service is currently eligible to retire. While a number of agencies have taken action to upgrade their succession planning practices, considerable work remains to be done in implementing programs that will provide the agencies with the depth of leadership talent they need to meet the rapidly evolving demands of the 21st century. In addition, agencies must put processes in place to identify, capture, retain and transfer knowledge to successors.

Hard Goals: The Secret of Getting From Where You Are to Where You Want To Be by Mark Murphy

    HARD Goals
Why is that some people achieve so much while others seem to just spin their wheels and get nowhere? When you analyze the science of achieving big things, you’ll find superachievers set themselves HARD (heartfelt, animated, required and difficult) goals and then go out and work towards achieving those goals with passion and intensity. It’s the setting and achieving of those HARD goals which drives their achievements. To achieve more, get into the habit of setting yourself HARD goals – goals which are heartfelt, animated, required and difficult.

To Sell Is Human by Daniel Pink

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, one in nine Americans works in sales. Every day more than fifteen million people earn their keep by persuading someone else to make a purchase.
But dig deeper and a startling truth emerges:

Yes, one in nine Americans works in sales. But so do the other eight.

Whether we’re employees pitching colleagues on a new idea, entrepreneurs enticing funders to invest, or parents and teachers cajoling children to study, we spend our days trying to move others. Like it or not, we’re all in sales now.

The book To Sell Is Human offers a fresh look at the art and science of selling. As he did in Drive and A Whole New Mind, Daniel H. Pink draws on a rich trove of social science for his counterintuitive insights. He reveals the new ABCs of moving others (it’s no longer “Always Be Closing”), explains why extraverts don’t make the best salespeople, and shows how giving people an “off-ramp” for their actions can matter more than actually changing their minds.

Along the way, Pink describes the six successors to the elevator pitch, the three rules for understanding another’s perspective, the five frames that can make your message clearer and more persuasive, and much more. The result is a perceptive and practical book–one that will change how you see the world and transform what you do at work, at school, and at home.

The Power of Presence: Unlock Your Potential to Influence and Engage Others by Kristi Hedges

Presence: You know it when you see it, but what exactly is it? And how can a person get more of it? Everyone recognizes leaders with “presence.” They stand out for their seemingly innate ability to command attention and inspire commitment. But what is this secret quality they exude, exactly?

Executive and CEO coach Kristi Hedges demystifies this elusive trait, revealing that presence is the intersection of outward influencing skills and internal mental conditioning. Using her I-Presence model, the author shows how anyone – regardless of position or personality — can strengthen their impact. Readers will learn how to build trust as the foundation for leadership, eschew perfectionism for authenticity, banish limiting thoughts and behaviors, and galvanize their team through visionary, inspiring communications.

Stellar technical knowledge, a strong work ethic, excellent presentation skills—none of these tangible traits puts people on the career fast track as readily as a compelling presence. Filled with profiles of leaders with powerful presence and the latest neuroleadership research translated into actionable habits, this authoritative guide puts a little-understood, but potentially game-changing, tool within everyone’s reach.
