Topic: Is Coaching A Good Fit With Your OD Experience/Knowledge?

    Facilitator: Renee Brotman

    Program:
Unscientific research tells us that coaching skills and OD experience and knowledge are a good match.  Active listening, systems theory, and problem solving are all OD competencies.  The same can be said for coaching.  If you are thinking about coaching as a part of your OD practice, what else do you need to consider?  We’ll talk about a common coaching definition, types of coaching being offered, training and certification, coaching tools, all the other “stuff” you need to know to build a successful coaching business that reflects your vision and values as an OD practitioner.  Come prepared to ask questions and together we can learn from each other.

Topic: Using Edward de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats in Team Coaching

Presenter: Cynthia K. Miller, MA Ed., CPF, ACTP
Cynthia is President of Purposeful Solutions, LLC.  She retired from Federal Service where she led project teams in training, development and change initiatives.  She has designed and facilitated numerous workshops and multi-day events to improve team performance and maximize organization effectiveness.  Her coaching focuses on enhancing personal and leader presence as well as strengthening problem solving skills.

Cynthia holds certificates from the Georgetown University Organization Development program, the Shift-It Graphic Coaching program, and the International Coaching Academy. She is a Certified Professional Facilitator.

    Program:
As an effective coach, how do you work with a team that suffers from a series of shared negative experiences or has a rich history of discord and mistrust?   De Bono’s Six Thinking Hats is an effective coaching tool for use in these team interventions that thousands of business managers, educators, and government leaders around the world have already adopted with great success. The process is a practical and uniquely positive approach for helping individuals gain clarity in thinking, explore individual perspectives, and make decisions.  Come learn about the questions each hat answers and how you can use this approach with your coaching clients.  The session will include a quick overview of the de Bono Six Thinking Hats theory followed by interactive small group exercises.  To expedite the learning process, cue sheets will be provided.  A debrief for the evening will be done using the Six Thinking Hats.

Topic: "Beyond Management:  Taking Charge at Work "

    Facilitator: Mark Addleson | maddleso@gmu.edu
Mark Addleson is a teacher, writer-researcher, and consultant, with a PhD in management.  He began this journey in South Africa at the Graduate School of Business, in Johannesburg, at the time of the Soweto Uprising.  This phase ended in the mid 90’s with the birth of a democratic new nation.  At the time he headed the school’s general management program and consulted to organizations in many sectors.

Crossing the Atlantic he joined the faculty of George Mason University.  He was instrumental in starting the Masters degree in Organization Development and Knowledge Management (ODKM) in the School of Public Policy and served as the program’s founding director.

A recovering economist, Mark was a director of Econometrix (Pty) Ltd. for a number of years, consulting to a wide range of companies and government departments.  He is now an Associate of the OCL Group, LLC.

    Program:
Mark Addleson’s book, "Beyond Management: Taking Charge at Work" (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011), is about management and knowledge-work and the fact that they are completely incompatible.

Managers and consultants alike – in fact everyone who works – should be paying attention to work, but we don’t.  We are focused on managing and on ‘six D’s’ –documents, data, directives, deliverables, deadlines, and dollars – that have nothing to do with getting things done.

Looking ‘inside’ work, at what it is, what people do, and what it takes to do it well, we discover that management practices, which evolved in the industrial age for organizing factory-work, are completely unsuited to organizing knowledge-work.  The result is all kinds of breakdowns at work.

In this session, Mark will set the scene for a general discussion by highlighting the nature of knowledge-work, what it means to wear management lenses, and why these hide the most important aspects of work.  In the discussion he would like to hear participants’ responses to these arguments and their  views on where we go from here.

Topic: Not in my Backyard!  Mapping Complex Stakeholder Dialogue

    Facilitator: Michael Randel | michael.randel@gmail.com
Michael Randel, Director of Randel Consulting Associates, has twenty years’ experience supporting the effectiveness of individuals, teams and organizations.  He supports his clients in facilitating learning and change through facilitation, executive coaching, providing advice and training.  Working in both face-to-face and virtual environments, Michael design and implement interventions that lead to results and sustainable impact.

Michael works with clients at local, national and global levels, and has advised organizations in more than twenty countries across Africa, Asia, Europe and North America.  He has worked as an internal and external consultant for such organizations as the World Bank, the United Nations, the US Green Building Council, and Bethesda Green.

Michael’s qualifications include a master’s degree in Social and Organizational Learning from George Mason University, and post-graduate degrees from South Africa.  His advanced training as a facilitator took place in South Africa and the United States He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Mid-Atlantic Facilitators Network (MAFN), and is a member of CBODN and ASTD.  He is one of fewer than 200 people in the United States recognized as a Certified Professional Facilitator by the International Association of Facilitators (IAF).

    Program:
Change processes invariably require balancing the interests of multiple stakeholders with the requirements of business, social and governmental constraints.  Stakeholder consultations represent a particular form of social and organizational complexity. They frequently become gridlocked by the weight of competing interests.  A creative design, together with facilitation techniques that embrace the complexity of the issues, can lead to breakthrough agreements and results.

This session will introduce a creative design for stakeholder consultations that can be applied in a variety of organizational settings.  It will also introduce a facilitated approach for mapping the issues at the heart of many complex organizations and building insight and consensus.  We will reveal how these tools can be used by OD professionals to bring about sustained change in dynamic and complex environments.  A case study will illustrate how stakeholder dialogue resulted in the identification and acceptance of creative solutions to what is usually an intractable set of community and organizational challenges.

Topic: Facilitating Professional and Organizational Change Using a Systemic Approach

    Facilitator: Harrison Snow

For the past 22 years Harrison’s mission has been to help raise the performance of an organization to the next level. During that time his mission has taken him to 24 different countries to build teams, develop teamwork and leadership skills, empower employees, resolve conflicts, enhance strategic decision making and inspire change.  He is the author of three books on management and teambuilding, the most recent being Tools For Teams.  Harrison has been an active member of CBODN for nearly as long as he has been a consultant and has presented at numerous conferences and professional gatherings.  He started his career in the field of outdoor teambuilding and believes from experience that groups learn more when they get out of their chairs and interact standing up.  For more information, please visit www.teambuildingassociates.com.

    Program:
    • Do you have a challenging client or a client with a challenging situation?
    • Are you are looking for insights on how to best deal with the current challenges in your work?
    • Do you have a range of strategic options to consider?
If so, you may find the organization constellation (OC) methodology to be particularly useful tool to have in your professional toolkit.

The OC approach is based on the phenomenological work of Bert Hellinger with family systems and Rupert Sheldrake’s Field Theory. Although OC is fairly well known in Europe, it is just beginning to be introduced in North America.

The foundation of OC methodology is that organizations are systemic in nature.  The parts that make up the whole are all part of a system that has an inherent order and balance.  The performance or health of the system is enhanced when that inherent order and balance is maintained or restored.  The system itself can be represented physically (by individuals or symbols) in a way that allows nonphysical information to become more visible.

Topic: Coaching As a Leadership Competency

    Facilitator: Penny Potter

    Program:
Penny Potter will discuss why coaching skills are a key leadership competency.  She will discuss why she believes that developing coaching skills not only helps leaders to develop their direct reports, but also helps leaders develop their own emotional intelligence.  On an organizational level, instilling a coaching culture within an organization fosters respect and dialogue and helps to reduce reactivity.  Penny’s thinking on this topic is shaped by her personal experience as a coach, her experience heading large and small-scale coaching programs for client organizations, and her experience designing and delivering the course, Leading by Coaching: Developing and Enhancing Performance 24/7,  to 200 managers.  This session will include experiential exercises and handouts.
