Andrea is a coaching and facilitation consultant who uses a variety of agile processes, tools, and techniques to foster improvement in IT organizations.  After years of work as a manager, analyst and programmer on IT projects in the Federal space, Andrea's mission is to free up staid assumptions and rigid thinking about 'why things are the way they are' -- ultimately help foster more learning, joy and effective collaboration for IT and other knowledge workers.

The Clean Language question technique was introduced to her through a back-of-the-napkin type of after-dinner talk at the 'Amplify Your Effectiveness' conference she attended in 2010. These few minutes changed the way she thought about when she learns at her best, which in turn has radically changed what she is now focused on. A five minute ‘Clean’ session spontaneously helped her figure out what was really important to her.  So she gave up PM work in favor of coaching and facilitation.

Since then, she has studied Clean Language on her own and with Judy Rees, who is a well-known expert on Clean Language use for coaches. She recently certified as a 'Training from the Back of the Room' trainer, and is developing a series of workshops using those techniques. She is an advocate of experiential learning and collaborative learning. She lives in Northern Virginia.

Program Description:

Clean Language is a remarkable questioning technique that goes right to the heart of another’s experience in a respectful and non-intrusive way.  Clean Language was developed by counseling psychologist David Grove in therapeutic settings to help the client model his thinking without ‘contamination’ from the therapist.  It was so effective and powerful that others have now also extended and used it in a variety of business, coaching, and non-profit settings. It can be applied in one-on-one conversations, in groups, and also in combination with other expressive endeavors such as drawing to bridge gaps and promote mutual understanding.  Clean Language questions help expedite the release of knowledge. They lead individuals and teams to better outcomes by surfacing mental models, assumptions, and metaphors.

In this 2 hour session, we will see how Clean Questions work, how they help people to create their own unique narratives, and how groups might be facilitated to become more collaborative through metaphor development. I will share salient facts and stories about Clean Language, and then we will spend most of the time doing pair or small group work and sharing our results.
