OD Book Discussion SIG

Joint CBODN/ASTD SIG

Topic:  Special Session: Poetry for Facilitators
Facilitated by Susana Isaacson and Susan Symington

SIG Leaders:

Linda Ferguson (ljfergusonphd@gmail.com | 540-588-5928)

SIG Description:

The OD SIG is built around the idea of an executive book summary.  Each month a volunteer presenter introduces and helps us understand the key ideas from a recently-published book whose topic is relevant to Organization Development practitioners.  It is not necessary to have read the book to participate; attendees are encouraged to join in the discussion based on personal experience.

Session Description:

This is a session about poetry and how it is used effectively in organizational development work.  We invite participants to bring a favorite poem or quote and to be prepared to tell when and how it has helped them move a group forward.  We welcome poetry written by the participants and will send a compilation of what we discuss to those who would like copies.

Facilitator Bios:

Both Susan and Susana are Partners in COPIA Coaching and Consulting, a small women-owned business in Northern Virginia.

Susana Isaacson is an experienced and accomplished organizational executive coach, leadership development consultant and public speaker. Prior to retirement in 2007, she served as director of leadership development, organizational learning and professional coaching at the National Clandestine Service of the Central Intelligence Agency.  Since that time, she has built an independent, robust practice in such areas as organization change interventions through effectiveness studies, designing and leading organizational retreats, leading programs to clarify work/life integration issues and through executive coaching, facilitating focused conversations that lead to happier people in more inclusive work environments.  Susana holds an MS in Organization Development from Johns Hopkins University. She is an International Coach Federation (ICF) credentialed Master Certified Coach (MCC).

Susan Symington is a former officer with the Central Intelligence Agency for 31 years who retired to begin full time work coaching and consulting on leadership development in the public and private sectors. She has considerable experience living and working overseas, mostly in South America and the Caribbean.  In the CIA, Susan managed human resources, including recruiting, training, employee development, coaching, mentoring, and succession planning.  She has designed and taught extensively in leadership programs and courses.  In 2007 she completed the Newfield Coach Training Program.  Subsequently she became one of the CIA’s internal coaches, as well as starting her own business with private sector clients.  She is a member of the Washington chapter of the International Coach Federation, the International Consortium of Coaching in Organizations, as well as the Conference Board and Linked2Leaders.
