Peter SengeWe are honored to have Peter Senge join CBODN and help us explore OD’s role in the new millennium. Best known for his work in learning organizations, Peter’s work has continued to evolve. Please take a look at two recent articles that shed light on his most recent thinking: “Awakening Faith in an Alternative Future” from Reflections, and “Creating Desired Futures in a Global Society” from Reflections. Peter will present the morning keynote and will also offer a small breakout session. Peter Senge’s morning keynote: “The Shifting Context for Organization Change” The world in which businesses operate today is one of unprecedented interdependence and unprecedented risk. Issues that never appeared on the corporate radar screen, other than perhaps for PR or government affairs staff, are gradually becoming strategic for more and more businesses – issues like global C02 emissions and climate change, water availability, embedded poverty, social and political instability, and material waste and toxicity. While most companies are still managing to act as if these problems belonged to ‘somebody else,’ people around the world are waking up to see that the globalization process itself is headed in directions that few want to go, and wondering who is in control. Within companies, these global and local systemic imbalances manifest in a host of challenges, concerns, and opportunities for change leaders at all levels: Increasing diversity, cultural myopia, fear and polarization, and corporate responsibility. Peter Senge’s Breakout Session: “What is OD Practice in this Changing World?”* As OD practitioners help organizations wrestle with the unprecedented issues, they in turn must question their own practice. For example, the traditional division of process expertise from content expertise becomes irrelevant when there is no internal expertise on key substantive issues like climate change. Deferring to managerial authority when those in positions of authority have no meaningful background or understanding is tantamount to pretending that such issues do not exist - undoubtedly the most dangerous and irresponsible stance for helping the organization. Steve BrighamTransforming Democracy: Large Scale Interventions – for Citizens Presented by Steve Brigham, COO of America Speaks We've entered a new era of networked relationships, complex interactions, competing ideas... of complexity, diversity, velocity, and change. The ability to hear and learn from others has become a critical currency for individuals and organizations alike. We work with our clients to be truly present - to truly listen. We consult with organizations on how to deeply engage stakeholders - to truly listen. But what of our society and our democracy? Citizens have largely lost their rightful role in public decision making. The dramatic growth and power of special interest groups has constrained leaders and squeezed ordinary citizens out of the decision-making process. Hear how we are bringing large scale interventions to communities and to democracy and how we are helping democracy return to its roots of government for the people by the people. Learn how these large scale interventions can support and model the way for interventions at every level. .” Click here for more details. Click here to download presentation. (PDF)
Steve Brigham's Breakout Session: "OD’s Essential Role in a Changing World" The pre-conference online dialogue allowed practitioners to explore the dynamic environment we work and live in and the role we must play in it. This session is designed to extend and deepen our understanding of this critical issue. This session will use the process and technology that is used in large-scale community dialogues across the United States, AmericaSpeaks’ 21st Century Town Meeting® process. Using this process, we will further the deliberation on this critical conference theme to search for areas of common ground and agreement. The results of this session will be carried forward post-conference as a central dialogue for CBODN during 2007. Dr. Hany Malik & Kim Waldman“Levers of Change: Integrating OD and Executive Coaching” Presented by Dr. Hany Malik & Kim Waldman of Suntiva. Dr. Mary Frances Winters“What is the Role of the OD Practitioner in Creating Inclusive Cultures?” Presented by Dr. Mary Frances Winters As organizations begin to better understand the distinction between diversity and inclusion, they recognize that diversity in and of itself will not lead to thriving, productive organizations but that inclusion has the potential to do so, albeit a much more complex and difficult goal to achieve. HR is instrumental helping organizations address workforce changes such as demographic shifts skill shortages and the attraction and retention diverse talent. The OD practitioner, however, has a more holistic and integrated role in helping organizations learn to be inclusive of the myriad types of diversity that include but are not limited to workforce issues. This session will explore some of the key systemic issues in organizations and help practitioners examine their personal competency in diversity and inclusion and how to enhance organizational diversity competency. Bob Marshak“The Political Dimension of Transformation Change” presented by Bob Marshak with American University This session explores the political aspects of transformational change in organizations. This includes understanding an organization’s political system and determining how to work with it, or change it, in order to effect transformational change. It also involves considering our role as OD practitioners in the politics of organizational transformation. The session will include a mix of presentation, discussion, and exercises. Harrison OwenHALF-DAY SESSION: “In the Company of Fellow Travelers: Continuing Our Journey to New Destinations” presented by Harrison Owen, creator of Open Space Technology In the company of Fellow Travelers: Continuing our Journey to New Destinations will be an open space session facilitated by the originator of Open Space Technology (OST), Harrison Owen. OST enables self-organizing groups of all sizes to deal with hugely complex issues in a very short period of time. While OST normally goes for two to three days, this will be a half-day session that will allow participants to explore how to transform ourselves as we move through mid-life and beyond and make the shift to generativity. What do we need from the world now, and what does the world need from us as experienced practitioners in OD? We’ll consider the baggage best left behind, explore alternative paths, and engage perspectives that enhance our journey into the next phase of our lives and our profession. Dr. Alfred L. Cooke and Stephen Blair“New Approaches for OD’s Foundational Techniques” Presented by Alfred L. Cooke, Ph.D., and Stephen Blair, MBA The OD field is dynamic and constantly evolving. Many of the foundational techniques are gaining new life and providing surprising results through their breakthrough impact in complex organizations. We often forget that the basis of much of the work we do in organization development is the T group. The T group itself has sometimes fallen on hard times as too intense and “touchy feely” for use in the government and business environments. The Federal Executive Institute has found much success in adapting the concepts of the T group in its work with senior executives through the four week residential Leadership for a Democratic Society Program. The focus of this session is on relating the background and use of the T group technology and some of the updates that have been implemented that have made it a cutting edge approach to leadership development for over 20,000 Federal Executives over the past 40 years. Participants will have an opportunity to experience several of the processes that make up the program and determine their usefulness in their own OD practices. Click her for more details. Panel Session“Leading Edges in OD: Where To From Here?” A Panel Discussion featuring Charles Seashore (moderator) with Dr. Lennox E. Joseph, Ka Flewellen, Dr. Cathy L. Royal Where is the OD field headed? What informs the direction? What are some emerging considerations that define the leading edges for the field? Leading edges always have a history. We will focus on leading edge issues in education, inclusion & diversity and social change that are most relevant to organization transformation. Some leading edges have ancient roots and some are of recent vintage. Leading edges at the intersection of organization development and social justice will be explored as special priorities. This panel will consist of Charles Seashore (Lewin Center) moderator; and Cathy Royal (Royal Consulting Group), Ka Flewellen (American University/NTL), and Lennox Joseph (World Bank).
