Kathryn Gaines helps clients achieve results by building leadership capacity, commitment, and competence. She offers 15 years of experience as a management and organization development consultant and coach. Kathryn partners with clients

Kathryn views leadership as a collaborative practice, not an individual position, and she acts to cultivate leadership that is less focused on bold events and directive moves and centered more on securing action in service of shared interests through dialogue and ongoing relationships. Kathryn works to create a climate that fosters trust, engagement, and innovation, with attention to results. She brings to this endeavor strong interpersonal, presentation, and group facilitation skills. Kathryn is perceptive, open and collaborative when working with clients to address complex problems or resolve difficult behavioral dynamics. She offers the maturity and interpersonal savvy to partner well with a wide range of work groups, based on broad collaboration with executives and board members, managers and supervisors, and professional and support staff. She has also partnered extensively with medical and scientific professionals, nurses, clinicians, and healthcare administrators, as well as attorneys and analysts.
Kathryn has spoken professionally to international, national and regional groups of practitioners and scholars. Select topics include: “A Communicative Theory of Leadership Practice”, “Informal Leadership on Teams”, “Reluctant Leadership: The Risks and Rewards of Leadership without Formal Authority”, and “Leadership in Healthcare”. She wrote “Leading Work Teams”, the February 2006 issue of InfoLine published by the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD). Kathryn serves as field editor for the column “Consultants In Practice”, ASTD Links,. She was the 1999-2000 President of the Metro DC Chapter of ASTD and is President of the Board of Directors of the Chesapeake Bay Organization Development Network, and Chair, Leadership Development Member Interest Group with the International Leadership Association.
Kathryn earned her Ph.D. in Leadership and Change from Antioch University and holds an M.A. in Communication from the University of Maryland. She is qualified to administer the Leadership Spectrum Profile, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Denison Organizational Culture Survey, Denison Leadership Development 360-degree Survey, and The Leadership Circle Profile.
