Shifting Organizations from Reactive to Resilient
by Cultivating Human Potential

“You cannot solve a problem from the same consciousness that
created it. You must learn to see the world anew”
- Albert Einstein
About the Conference:

This year’s conference provides an opportunity to see ourselves and our organizations through a resilient lens, and to discover how developing resiliency can significantly expand individual and organization potential and possibilities.

Uncertainty is the new certainty. Change and ambiguity are the new reality in our professional lives. In this environment, it is easy for individuals, leaders, and organizations to become overwhelmed and reactive, rather than proactive. This reactivity depletes people and organizations of their energy, leaving little or no space for strategic thinking and action.

In contrast, resilient individuals, leaders and organizations cultivate a durable and adaptable foundation from which they can bounce back from challenge and crisis; learn from their experiences; and not only weather, but thrive amidst the constants of uncertainty.

So how do we – as leaders, practitioners, and individuals – develop the capabilities to thrive within this new reality? What do leaders need to do differently to build their own resilience and help their people and their organization develop resiliency? What are the key characteristics of resilient organizations?
What is the return on investment from this approach?

Through participatory sessions and engaging keynote speakers, participants will deepen their understanding of the theory, skills and practices necessary to develop resilient people and organizations. We hope that this will enlighten attendees and help them better understand how to utilize the untapped human potential within themselves, their peers, and their organization.

About the Program:

CBODN is pleased to announce a stellar line-up of speakers for the 2012 Annual Conference.

Our 2012 keynote speaker, Dr. Rafe Sagarin, is a marine ecologist and environmental policy analyst.  Dr. Sagarin’s book Learning from the Octopus is about diving into nature’s lessons on how to be adaptable in a hostile and unpredictable world. Adaptability, at an individual, team, and organization level, is a key competency in cultivating resiliency and being able to thrive amidst uncertainty. In addition to illuminating natural adaptability from viruses to octopuses to ecosystems, Dr. Sagarin will use stories of adaptable businesses, first responders and soldiers to demonstrate that almost any individual and any organization can vastly improve the effectiveness of their responses to a changing world.

Our Luncheon keynote speaker, Mr. Rick Maurer, is a renowned change management consultant, expert, speaker, and best selling author.  Mr. Maurer will speak on the topic of resistance and resilience, and will introduce his simple but robust tool that will help leaders build support for change and overcome resistance.

The conference day is built around four breakout sessions based upon the following four tracks: Individual/Self, Leader/Team, Organization/Strategy, and Case Study/Application.  Presenters were asked to propose sessions based upon one or more of these lenses.

Individual/Self: What does it mean to be resilient? What does it look like in terms of skills, practices and behaviors? How do we go about developing and sustaining our personal resilience? How does resilience relate to the development of personal potential?

Leader/Team: What does resilience look like in leaders? How can leaders develop the insights and capacities to foster resilient organizations? How can they embody these capabilities in their own management styles and those of their teams? How is resilience related to the development of leadership potential?

Organization/Strategy: What are the key characteristics of resilient organizations? What types of structures, cultures, and practices are most conducive to fostering resilience? What is the ROI for organizations that develop resiliency as part of their culture?

Case Study/Application: This track emerged during the proposal review process. It contains two organization case studies and two unique lenes through which to view the application of resilience in organizations.
